Technique - Minimum Movement Exercise (Guitar Lesson IM-114) How to play IF Stage 1

hi how you doing Justin here welcome to
lesson I am one one four in which we're
going to be talking about minimum
movement and finger control now many of
you guys probably suffer from something
I call flying fingers which is where
your fingers fly right off away from the
finger board when they should really be
cusom shirts no minimum
quite close doing this exercise will
help you with all sorts of guitar skills
because it's really about controlling
your fingers so you'll find if after
another while of doing this exercise
you'll find that your chord changes are
a little faster your scales are faster
and more under control too got loads of
other things later on as well because
it's all to do with accuracy and the
controlling of your fingers now we're
going to be using the G major scale so
let's go to a close up I'll show you the
scale with the flying fingers then
without and then I'll show you exactly
how to do this exercise which I think
will probably make a big difference to
your technique okay let's start off by
looking at a G major scale
it's quite possible that your G major
scale looks something like this
when it should look something more like
this you can see that second one looks
an awful lot easier than the first one
now what the idea here is that you play
the scale really really slowly and you
don't let your fingers move any more
than a half a centimeter away from the
fingerboard so they're really just
creeping really do it you know as slowly
as you need to if it wants to be this
slow that's fine too it doesn't matter
you're just really trying to concentrate
on not letting them lift up and if you
watch any of the guys that are
especially the technically great guitar
players you'll find that their fingers
hardly move and if you if you like me
you watch it you know Steve viols Joe
Satriani or whatever doing these runs
and their fingers look like they're
hardly moving and it's because they're
not really moving very much they're
exercising really good control of their
fingers and therefore those minimum
movements make a really big difference
so this is the exercise and what I would
recommend is for five minutes
I just let my little finger flower
fingers are thinking about talking to
you you're really concentrating on
getting the movement as small as
possible
and you can see if I just do again the
flying fingers think you're doing that
it just looks difficult compared to
doing them so this is really really
really good exercise if you find
yourself making mistakes in the G Major
scale while you're trying to do this
exercise you're probably better off not
playing the scale and changing to doing
just a little finger pattern like using
just 1 2 3 4 on each string you know
just just because especially if you're
just learning the scale you don't want
to introduce those mistakes into your
mind that would be a really bad thing to
do so if you're not confident with the
scale change to just doing this 1 2 3 4
kind of finger pattern thing or weight
doing the exercise until you feel more
confident with the scale that's a pretty
important little tip there for this one
really really good exercises when you'll
probably find it makes a big difference
in lots of areas of your guitar playing
definitely worth giving this one some
serious practice make sure you
concentrate when you're doing this
remember you know get the timer out set
it for 5 minutes and for that 5 minutes
really Zone in and make sure that you're
doing really good solid practice on this
one don't let your mind drift too much
stay concentrating on making sure those
thing is hardly move you know there's no
this is definitely definitely not a
speed exercise doing it fast is kind of
pointless you're really aiming for
really really slow really really as
smaller movements as you possibly can
speed comes later you can do it as a
speed exercise but that's a different
thing for now we're just concentrating
on really learning to control your
fingers and making the smallest
movements you possibly can so have fun
with that and I'll see you for another
lesson sometime real soon take care bye
bye
