so today's question came in via email is
the first email question so I decided to
go ahead jump start the day kick started
off with this question so let me go
ahead and read it but bear with me
because you guys know ain't the best
reader my question is I have heard
people say that most designs are limited
or should be limited to twelve by twelve
design space what are your thoughts on
that
is it more based on the design or
ironing out from my perspective it
looked like your bad boys Chicago Bulls
shirt was probably 14 inches and width
lastly do you have the dimension formula
per se for a design that'll be pressed
on 19 inch with large shirt or say a 18
inch with medium shirt I have been
calculating and scaling appropriately
but I just wanted to have other
perspective another perspective or how
others may be going about it all right
now I have a very very old video over on
YouTube where I talk about sizing it's
an old video it doesn't have a lot of
views it should because I get this
question a lot so what I might do is
even a reupload down video or what I'll
probably do is I may rerecord that video
I'll decide that later but I'm gonna go
ahead in the description on this video
and put a link to that video so that you
can watch it and fooled but my answer is
very very simple that twelve by twelve
is standard because of screen printing
in the olden days you got one screen
people don't want to pay multiple
dollars for screens and in the old days
it took a lot to actually get that
screen prepped and stuff like that so if
you look at this picture that I'm on
pop-up right here this is what they used
to have to do in order to line it up
they had like a light table and they had
like custom text and they had their like
ladies things out so you can only get
one screen it wasn't a different size
for this size shirt a different size for
that size shirt you have one shot and
then let custom shirts no minimum
if you're the screen printer you make a
mistake it took so much time to get
things ready that basically people
really just didn't want to have multiple
size shirts because it would cost so
much more at setup time we're spoiled
today because in Photoshop and it's
silhouette and in Inkscape and all of
these design pull design software is
like illustrator and stuff we can we can
pop out a design like this we can change
the size like this and it doesn't matter
so that is kind of an old way of
thinking or if you're a screen printer
usually if you say customer says hey I
want a 12 by 12 design right and they
say hey for the three X's can you make
the design bigger why are you gonna say
what are you gonna respond you're gonna
be like well that's gonna cost you an
extra a setup fee because I have to set
up a whole new screen for that job or if
you got adult shirts and t-shirts you
can usually get down to like a small
maybe extra salt it'll look super large
on a kid shirt depend on how you lay
your design out or it'll look super
small small
I'm sorry not or but and it looks like
small compared to that putting on a
large shirt but you usually put the same
size on everything all right now when
you're doing vinyl because I'm assume
that's where they're talking about
because they're scaling up and down when
you're doing vinyl you really have the
freedom but I do not change the size
because I'm a screen printer by nature I
started with screen printing and it is
what it is you get a 12-inch design it
however if it's like a woman's shirt
I'll go ten inches if it's a kid's shirt
it'll start at eight inches
adult shirts 14 I'm sorry 12 inches and
sometimes when it is bigger than that I
will go ahead and scale it up sometimes
if it's like a one-person one one shirt
but if it's a large order especially
because they're gonna say hey how come
it's pretty bigger how come you know you
just get too many questions everything
gets the same size and if anything under
that what I do is I measure from here to
here all right and say this was 14
inches I would subtract - and that would
give you this is actually a twelve inch
so this that'll give you a perfect
twelve inch design but let's say it came
you're doing like a kids ones it is
something
- six inches I would subtract two inches
because that's that first two inches is
gonna fall under the armpit here like
right here right if you put your arm
down you can no longer see it so it'll
fall under the armpit saucer track two
inches inch from both sides and then
I'll go with that design but I look at
the ruler and say hmm
that I was an 8 inch white shirt I'm
going to 6 does that look good she can I
make it a little smaller or bigger what
should I do
you know I mean so it is a judgement
call when you're working with things
outside of t-shirts but that is the old
way of thinking of the standard 12 by 12
design and honestly you can go 12 by 14
I believe that boys design was taller
than it was why and sometimes I also
make it appear bigger because it was
maybe this was maybe 11 by 11 and then
the words were made it like a lot larger
or taller but basically you can just
kind of adjust and get a feel for it but
I'm gonna make sure I link that video up
down in the description and you should
definitely definitely check it out and I
may read up load it because a lot of
people have this question or again I'll
decide whether or not to reshoot it and
you know explain it I'm gonna watch it
myself and see how thorough it was and
if I have anything now year or so a year
or so later to add to it alright so this
is day three I think this is day three
